Jacqueline Jones was born on June 6, 1914, in Dallas to parents Alger Jones and Mabel Delia Kerr Jones. She was extremely proud of the Scottish heritage of her Kerr ancestors and their ties to Corsicana. She had done extensive research in Scotland on the Kerr family. Her parents were married in the Third Avenue Presbyterian Church of Corsicana which was to later become Westminster Presbyterian. Maternal grandfather was Calvin E. Kerr, son of Judge and Mrs. J.H. Kerr. Judge Kerr, his father, brothers and cousins were some of Corsicana’s earliest settlers. He served in a log cabin courthouse where the present one stands between Second and Third avenues. Cal E. Kerr was born in his parents’ home on the southeast corner of the intersection of West Third Avenue and North 12th Street. Cal Kerr was a devoted and faithful member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He took an active part in the union and reunion of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Presbyterian Church in the USA. Jacqueline spent much time of her youth living and visiting in Corsicana with Kerr relatives who resided around and near the courthouse and are buried at Oakwood Cemetery.

Jacqueline spent the first years of her childhood in Dallas. The family then moved and she lived in several towns across Texas including Longview, Nacogdoches, Kilgore, Hereford, Pampa, Childress and Corsicana. Jacqueline graduated from Childress High School in 1931 where she was a cheerleader and the state winner of the Latin composition contest. She was also an accomplished vocalist and violinist. After completing a secretarial course in Corsicana, she returned to Dallas in 1933 where she was employed at The Dallas Morning News for nine years.

Following her marriage in 1942 to Charles J. Sawicki, they resided in New Orleans, La., where her husband attended Loyola Dental School. Dr. and Mrs. Sawicki moved to Grand Prairie in 1949 where they resided until his death in 2000. Mrs. Sawicki then moved to Temple to be near her sister who took care of her during her last years.

Mrs. Sawicki was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie where she was a Bible teacher in the Women’s Organization, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and member of the choir. She was a co-founder of the Grand Prairie Music Club, member of the Literature Department of the Grand Prairie Woman’s Club, Local and Texas State Story League member, and for 10 years was executive secretary of the Grand Prairie Community Concert Association. Mrs. Sawicki is credited with bringing “culture” to Grand Prairie.

Mrs. Sawicki was a world traveler, having visited numerous foreign countries where she cultivated old and new friends and enjoyed the local cultures and customs. She enjoyed all of the beauties of nature, especially flowers, bird watching, animals and watching the moon; and, she was an avid bridge player.

Friends and family could frequently be found at Mrs. Sawicki’s home for some type of entertainment which always included good music and good food. She was the ultimate hostess having every event planned to the smallest detail and beautifully coordinated. Guests were always welcome in her home and one of her many favorite sayings was “Happiness is having company.”

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her precious “baby” sister, Joanna Jones Newnam of Temple; her beloved nieces, nephews and their spouses, Penny and Lewis Dimler of Annandale, Va., Pam and Jim Williams of Lott, Cal and Gayle Newnam of Georgetown, and Noel Newnam of Boulder, Colo.; great-niece, Sarah Richards of Fairfax, Va.; great-nephews, Drew Richards and wife Denise of Bristow, Va., Eric Newnam and Brett Newnam of College Station; and numerous cousins and loyal friends.

Marvin Aldredge
abt 1971 - 1989

Student dies of apparent suicide
An 18 year-old- Kerens High School student died Monday afternoon about 1 p.m. of an apparent suicide in the school’s gym during a P.E. class.
Marvin Aldredge, a junior, was discovered by two students in the weightroom area of the boy’s dressing room. He apparently hung himself by suspending a rope through some of the weight equipment in the dressing room, according to school officials.
Emergency crews and members of the Navarro County Sherriff’s department were called to the scene. Aldredge’s body was taken to Dallas where an autopsy is being performed, by order of Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace, Badie Stewart.
The student had been living with the Jack Marshall family in Kerens since Dec. 13. He was originally from Celina, where his family still resides.
According to superintendent of Kerens schools, Lloyd Smith, the student had been told that he was to visit with one of the school’s counselors at the beginning of the P.E. class, but Alderdge never made the appointment.
“This is very tragic no matter where it happens,” said Smith of the incident, “but because he had lived here such a short time, much of his (Aldredge’s) situation remains a mystery to us.”
According to Smith, the school district is standing ready with trained counselors to speak with the students concerning the tragedy.
“We are going to be evaluating the situation today and will see what we feel that we need to do in order to meet the needs of the individual students,” Smith said “We will do what we have to in order to help the students get through this.” Funeral services for Aldredge are still pending at this time.
