A new listserver mailing list has been created for LifeLines, and those of you who are interested are invited to join. The ROOTS-L/soc.roots is not the appropriate place for detailed discussion about LifeLines. Contact Cliff Manis or me for the details. The name of the list is LINES-L. I will try to answer Craig Sturgeon's question about report generating in LifeLines. LifeLines contains no built-in reports. All reports are generated from programs. The programs look like programs. They have statements, expressions, procedures, loops, all those kinds of things. To write a LifeLines report program you have to be a programmer. To use a LifeLines program you just have to have it. There are no fancy WYSIWYG or other graphics tools to help you program the reports. Quite a number of programs exist, and with the increasing number of users, the number of programs is increasing. This style of report generating has pluses and minuses, and I make no bones about it one way or the other. If you like to hack or like the programs that already exist, LifeLines may be an option for you. If you have no interest in programming or don't think other person's programs would give you what you want, LifeLines is not for you. Best of luck to you all in your genealogical research. Thomas T. COMMSOFT (the creators of ROOTS III) have a program called RPLOT. For those who don't have plotters of their own, they also provide a service to take the output of the program and plot it for you. I haven't used the program myself, though I have a copy. Long before COMMSOFT came out with the program, I generated charts using a CAD software package. I prefer my own over the commercial samples I have seen and will continue to use it. What I have not yet done is take a standard GEDCOM file and read it automatically to create the same type of chart by using a script file for the CAD program. Creation of my chart was time-consuming. If I were to do charts for others, I would definitely automate the process. ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 10 Oct 1992 17:00:49 -0400 Reply-To: "(Norbert Bambach)" Sender: ROOTS-L Genealogy List From: "(Norbert Bambach)" Subject: Re: Tree program for HP-GL plotters? More on COMMSOFT's plotting program: RPLOT uses the database file generated by ROOTS III. It does not use GEDCOM to get its data, although ROOTS III, in conjunction with another COMMSOFT utility, can generate GEDCOM output. RPLOT is also a Windows- based program, and is therefore not limited to HP plotters. Charts can be reproduced on any printing device supported by Windows. Two forms of charts are available: 1. Pedigree chart (individual and all his/her ancestors). This chart follows the familiar "sideways tree pattern", which looks like: father of person A |-------------------- person A | -------------------| |mother of person A |-------------------- and so on for each person. 2. Direct Drop Chart- direct link between 2 people at each end of a direct lineage (siblings printed optionally). My own charts created with a CAD program use the "fan" chart format (just a personal preference; RPLOT output would be preferred by many). In-Reply-To: <9211141948.AA28976@milton.u.washington.edu> Paul-- My understanding of MAC PAF [which I what I personally use] is that it does not have many of the functions available that the DOS version does. I can't give you any specific examples at the moment, but I have had discussions with several people where they were able to sort there data in more sophisticated ways than I and also seemed to have many more printing options. Also, the bottom line is that NO is it not revised as often and in my opinion probably won't be until the ratio of MAC/DOS users is more evenly split. Since the LDS church now has information available on compact discs in the local Family History Centers that is accessible via PC type hardware and software I take this as the handwriting on the wall that this is the currently preferred operating environment. I will say however I really like PAF and I enjoy fooling around on the MAC enough that I am willing to overlook some of its shortcomings for the time being. Can anybody give me some ideas on the pros and cons of the two versions? A short while ago I studied a MSDOS/PAF manual to find out what features MSDOS/PAF had compared to Mac/PAF. Apart from an interface that people with an aversion to mice, and a wish to maintain arcane keyboard skills, might prefer (:-), I found that it had the following additional facilities: 1. "print" to a file or to screen as well as to an actual printer 2. print "end-of-line" individuals, individuals without recorded parents, surname frequencies 3. Focus/Design Reports 4. Automatic Match/Merge 5. Facts and Fun - find relationship, soundex search, count descendants, name frequency, 6. birth date graph, date calculation, ahnentafel nos. 7. checking facilities for Ancestral file submissions Of these, I regard item 1 as the most important, and as pointing out the single biggest limitation of Paf/MAC - though it makes very good use of the Macintosh graphical user interface, and is therefore very attractive to use, it does not interwork well with other applications. Thus GED Companion would seem to be a very important and useful add-on for use with Mac/PAF, and a cheap means of getting round the LDS's slowness in extending Mac/PAF. I in fact use a mixture of Mac/PAF and REUNION on my Mac, which - though costing more - between them considerably surpass the MSDOS/PAF facilities, with only one significant exception IMHO, namely the Automatic Match/Merge in MSDOS/PAF, though others who have tried the MSDOS/PAF Match/Merge have described it to me as rather crude and limited. The bottom line to Paul is, again IMHO, go ahead! Lisa Oberg mentioned PAF for the Mac. I agree that this is a very smooth and easy- to-use program. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles and it won't make the coffee for you in the morning, but it has data fields for everything that really matters, and, as she mentioned, if you're not LDS, you can turn off the LDS data fields. There's also Sesame, from Commsoft, the makers of Roots III for Compatibles. They're Commsoft, Inc. 7795 Bell Road, PO Box 310 Windsor, CA 95492-0310 (707) 838-4300 You can also supposedly find Sesame at giant software supermarkets. Sesame is like a spreadsheet for doing genealogy. It's main claim to fame is that you can store your notes and data as you find it, without forcing it into restrictive data fields. Each cell in the "spreadsheet" can contain up to 64K of text (65,535 characters). Sesame is good for organizing your research, but doesn't have a lot of fancy presentation or printing features. Both programs import and export GEDCOM. There are a number of other programs out there, such as Family Roots from Quinsept in MA, a shareware program called MacRoots, and a number of others. If you have access to a genealogical society or library, see if they have a copy of _Genealogical Computing_ magazine from Ancestry, Inc. To request this help message, send a message to genserv@csoftec.csf.com with a line similar to the following in the text of the message: send help to youraddress To request the current index, send a message to genserv@csoftec.csf.com with the text: send index to youraddress To request a specific file, send text: send file to youraddress Case of requests are unimportant, and incorrect requests will be quietly ignored. The 'send ' keyword must be at the beginning of the text line. The GenServer software does not look at the Subject: of the message. Multiple files may be requested in a single message, one per line: send file1 to youraddress send file2 to youraddress send file3 to youraddress The YOURADDRESS may be in the form relay!node!user, specifying a path directly from csoftec, or in the form user@system.domain. Examples: send index to systemid!username ^ ^ | |_____________ address |______________________ master index send gedcom.1 to username@system.domain.com ^ ^ | |__________ address |______________________ file to send Send messages that need to be read by a human to genadm@csoftec.csf.com /end of 'help' file/ Here is a copy of the 'index' file, to show names of the filenames. Since then many persons have begun using it, and a LL mailing-list has been formed. LL has evolved over the past couple months, mostly due to suggestions, comments, requests and gripes from its new users. In my biased opinion the system has improved much through this process. LL is still free and still best thought of as beta-level software. Below is a much abridged version of the original announcement: LifeLines is an experimental, second-generation genealogical software system. Its features include: o unlimited database and database record size ('til you fill up!) o any number of events, attributes, notes, etc, per person or family o no restrictions on the data stored about persons or families o no restrictions on family sizes or numbers of spouses o no restrictions on date or place formats o no restrictions on names or number of names per person o full GEDCOM compatibility o name access to persons, including wild carding and lists o full set of browse, add, delete, modify, link and merge operations o powerful genealogical report generator (very) o quick reference guide (now a bit out of date!) Things you should know and/or agree to before asking me for a copy: o only available for 386, sun3 and sun4 (sparc) UNIX (includes XENIX) o uses curses/ETI terminal independent user interface o record editing done via screen editors (vi, emacs, ...) o your data records must be structured in GEDCOM format o you can program your own reports or use programs from the LL community o LL is at your own risk software -- support is pretty good, but informal o LL will continue to evolve based on users' and my requests and ideas o LL doesn't burn bridges to other systems o there's a whole lot of things LL does not do Email to me at ttw@petrel.att.com if you are interested, or want to ask questions. A friend of mine is looking for a good family tree program (doesn't have DF. to be PD software). The program should be relatively to use since he is DF. not very "computer friendly/literate". Does anyone know of such a DF. program and where it can be obtained, ie. stores, ftp sites, etc.? Probably the most used, most popular, best supported, best documented, most user friendly (according to what my friends tell me), and most economical is PAF, (Personal Ancestral File) from the LDS. You can order it by calling 1-800-537-5950. The price is $35 plus $2 for a credit card order. I use it myself but am unable to make comparisons with other programs because it is the only one I have ever used. There are PAF user groups for help all over the country, and it is the standard at Family History Centers. Not to say that there aren't some others out there that are good enough, but I don't think you can go wrong with PAF. I'm sure you are talking about gcom. gcom (Gedcom-merge) is a program written to merge two GEDCOM files. It is available in source code (C) form by anonymous ftp from hallc1.cebaf.gov in the file /genealogy/programs/gcom.tar.Z I compiled it on a Sun4 system, with only minor difficulties. Its documentation claims that it also compiles under Mac MPW C, but no other portability is claimed. gcom takes two files as inputs, and tries to match individuals from one file with individuals from the second file. Its match function requires that the two individuals have the same name and title, that they both have birth events, and if the birth dates are both known that they are the same. (This I get from reading the code.) gcom doesn't do what I hoped it would do, merge together people within the same database. I got a big database of people from the IGI, but it contains *tons* of duplication. I tried to fake out gcom by entering the same file twice, but no dice. So this isn't really a review, as I didn't use the program for its intended use. I suggest you get it and try it for yourself to see if it will do what you want it to do. =Jim -- =Jim eggertj@atc.ll.mit.edu (Jim Eggert) ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 9 Dec 1992 09:27:35 GMT Reply-To: Steve Hayes Sender: ROOTS-L Genealogy List Comments: Warning -- original Sender: tag was NETNEWS@AUVM.AMERICAN.EDU From: Steve Hayes Subject: Re: PD software for geneology In article <1992Dec8.005453.12757@bsu-ucs> 00cklyons@leo.bsuvc.bsu.edu writes: >Does anyone have any info where I can get Public Domain Software >to attempt to organize geneological info? There is very little public domain software for organizing genealogical information, though there are a few incomplete utilities. There is some freeware and shareware though. A good Freeware program is Family History System by Phillip E. Brown. It should be available from BBSs and from shareware distributors. It takes a GEDCOM file and one (of several things it is capable of) thing it will do is to produce another file that is readable by MORE, which is a program that can produce wall charts, especially when a number of generations are involved. It also produces files that are readable by standard Mac word processing and spreadsheet programs. Gedcompanion works as advertised and seems bug free. Last August, I ordered it by land mail and it came in about a month.
