Having played around with a much cheaper hand-held scanner, maybe a Marstek but I'm not sure, I was skeptical about whether the Scanman would be worth the money. I was ecstatic when I saw the print quality obtained using the 256 gray scale selection of the Scanman. I scanned several photos ranging from 20 to 81 years old, both color and black-and-white. I also scanned some xerographic copies of photos from books to see how that worked. Even using the default settings, all of these scans looked good when printed. The phototouch software lets you play around with different contrast and brightness settings after scanning something in so you don't have to keep rescanning until you get the picture you want. Also, you can stitch up to four scans together to make one print and the direction of scan can be specified so that left-handers can scan from right to left, etc. Don't waste your money on the cheaper scanners, though. The Marstek? we had caused all of the printed images to be elongated. I highly recommend the Logitech Scanman 256 but get the latest version that comes with the phototouch software. By the way, the printer we use is a Packard-Bell laser with only 1.5MB of memory and we had no trouble printing a scan of a 4x6 photo that had been scanned at 400dpi and 256 gray scale. The disk file, compressed, was 1.8MB. We suspected we might need more printer memory and probably would for larger photos. ------ Debbie Wayne, Mail Drop AZ43 - DW220 VOICE: (602) 438-3286 phx.mcd.mot.com 2900 S. I have been looking rather seriously for genealogy software for the Mac. The only software I found that handles pictures is "Reunion" by Leister (although I remember someone mentioned to me that he was currently working on a product that would be able to include pictures). BUT: there was no mention anywhere in Leister's literature about handling sound. That's a pretty neat idea, tho. "Reunion" is not widely available. I have only found one mail order place (recommended by Leister) that carries it, and they are charging about $115 for it. The "Reunion" literatuyre also cliams that it handles memos (a box containing text), and it can import/export GEDCOM files. The members of the society have had good success with the mouse and the scanner. As for Catchword, well, someone has all ready summed it up. It is not the best. Catchword fails to recognize any characters that appear joined to another or any characters not completed. Therefore, newspaper print is out. The original scanned work must be of excellent quality and your scan must be smooth. Catchword's interface is easy to use. First, you select your scan preferences (ie. Single/Double pass, 100, 200, 300 or 400 DPI etc.). Second, you scan. You can view your scanned work as you scan (optional). Thirdly, Catchword scans your image. It looks for objects and tries to match them. You can view this process, however your operation takes about 10 times longer to complete (best turn this off). Upon completion Catchword places the user into a text editor so you can edit Catchword's mistakes. Anything unrecognizable will be replaced with an "@" sign. You will get lots of these. Best thing to do is try a copy before you buy. If you have excellent typing skills (like my wife) you can beat Catchword (because of the error rate of Catchword). If you are a hunt-n-peck typist and your original copy is in excellent condition, Catchword is faster. And, yes Catchword supports proportional spaced characters. -- Craig Sturgeon (sturgeon_c@eis.dofasco.ca) Dofasco Steel Inc. 100 Lyons Ave., 1330 Burlington St. East Brantford, Ontario Hamilton, Ontario Canada N3R 4R4 Canada L8N 3J5 (416) 548-4420 ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1992 10:51:18 GMT Reply-To: ROOTS-L Genealogy List Sender: ROOTS-L Genealogy List Comments: Warning -- original Sender: tag was NETNEWS@AUVM.AMERICAN.EDU From: "Kathleen Much" Subject: Re: What is current GEDCOM spec? Laplink (and I am guessing at it being "III") has a great package for exchanging information between the MAC & DOS highspeed via cable, and its a lot cheaper than getting the DOS disk writing capability for you MAC (unless you already have it that is)..... So, since GEDCOM output is the only prerequisite of the two packages that you need to look into, you should be home free! In fact, PAF does offer a DOS & MAC version of their package, don't they? I would assume that you could skip the GEDCOM portion and be able to exchange the data files themselves (via laplink) if this was benefitial to do so (you might prefer GEDCOM to send a subset) and assuming that PAF is using the same file layout on both platforms. The guide is highly graphical, but to-date no sound, no music and no video. It allows the reader to locate genealogy societies, historical societies, historical sites, libraries, newspapers, software packages, family history groups, and anything else that may help the reader. The reader first selects the country of interest. A map of that country appears. From there the reader clicks on the state/province of interest. And from there selects counties etc., searching for societies, etc. The guide will become available sometime this summer--free of charge. The guide is really never complete and since addresses of organizations are dynamic the guide requires constant maintenance. We've only just begun. Currently the guide includes: Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Switerland, United States and Wales. I took advantage of this offer and received my disks back in about a week. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1992 17:53:46 GMT Reply-To: ROOTS-L Genealogy List Sender: ROOTS-L Genealogy List Comments: Warning -- original Sender: tag was NETNEWS@AUVM.AMERICAN.EDU From: "thomas.t.wetmore..iv" Subject: GEDCOM 5.0; GEDCOM goals (technical; longish) There have been recent questions about the latest version of GEDCOM. The latest GEDCOM standard is version is 5.0 draft. It was released for review on 31 December 1991. LDS is keeping quiet about it until comments are in, and it is promulgated in final form. The first part of the standard defines the syntax of the GEDCOM "structured outline" format. In other words, how lines made up of level numbers, cross references, tags, and values, are structured into records. At this level, the standard is syntax only, ascribing no particular meaning and no particular conventions to tags, lines, or higher level structures. The second part of the standard defines the semantics for using the GEDCOM structure for holding lineage-linked information. Seven different types of records are defined (the usual person and family records and five others). In this part, different tags are given their particular semantic meanings, and various structures of lines (for example to specify different types of events) are defined. Format restrictions on values that are associated with certain tags are given (eg, for NAME and DATE lines). Finally there is some stuff about character sets, and a glossary of the LDS approved tags. In keeping with requests from the LDS, that is all I feel I can say about the draft standard. The goals of GEDCOM are laudible; whether they are met in today's systems is another question. Most genealogical computer systems of today store very limited amounts of information about persons and families in a fixed format, proprietary database. When their GEDCOM export features are used, the output GEDCOM records, by necessity, also contain little. And, when a system's GEDCOM import feature is used, only the data that fits into the system's internal database record format is extracted, generally resulting in loss of data. No commercial system of today takes advantage of the flexibility inherent in GEDCOM data structures. In storing genealogical data two important goals must be met: structure and flexibility. Structure is needed so that reports, charts, statistics, and so on, can be generated from the data. Flexibility is needed so that all information that you may find out about persons, families, sources of information, and so on, can be kept in your database. There are many ways of designing databases and file formats to simltaneously meet these goals, and GEDCOM provides a fine solution to this problem. However, the first generation genealogical systems of today only take advantage of the structure goal. It is being left to the next generation systems, of which there are none yet available, to take advantage of the flexibility goal. My experimental system, LifeLines, stores its database records in pure GEDCOM format. No transformations required on export or import, so no data is lost either way. There are no restrictions on the size or format of records. There can be any number of events, even of the same type. New tags can be invented. There are no length restrictions on values. All data obtained during research can be kept in the records, structured in any manner. All reports are generated by report programs that actually parse the GEDCOM records, extracting and computing whatever information is needed for a particular report. In other words, LifeLines makes full use of the potential of GEDCOM. I don't know what other software developers are doing, but we should all be demanding the type of next generation systems that will give us both structure and flexibility. Thomas T. I just (finally!) got through to the LDS PAF people in Utah, and got (disappointing) answers to three questions. So I thought I'd pass along some info and ask some questions. (1) They said that the next version of PAF for Macintosh will be ready "maybe in a year." So those of us using Mac PAF 2.1 and drooling over IBM PAF 2.2's features should stock up on towels. (2) They said that the Apple version of PAF has been discontinued and is no longer sold. This is disappointing because my parents have an Apple II GS and I'd like to get genealogy software for them. So -- does anyone have Apple PAF that they'd like to sell? Or I'd consider a copy of someone's since LDS doesn't sell it. Or can anyone suggest software for Apple that (a) can import GEDCOM files (so I can give my parents copies of my Mac PAF files) and (b) doesn't cost much more than $35 ? (3) How can I get my files from my Mac to their Apple? Supposedly the Mac can make Apple-readable disks but I don't know how. I'm using system 6.04 on an old Mac SE in case it matters. MacRoots is written Bruce Muckala, and can be reached on CompuServe at "72050.320@compuserve.com". The cheapest program, other than PAF, that I've seen that has GEDCOM capabilities is Reunion, which costs $95. I'm afraid that there just aren't that many genealogical programs for the Mac. There are a lot of public domain HyperCard genealogy stacks, but none of them have GEDCOM. >(3) How can I get my files from my Mac to their Apple? You say you have an "old" SE? The floppy drive in the newer Macs is called a "Superdrive", which is high density and can read/write to both DOS and PRO-DOS disks. If you don't have a Superdrive, then you're stuck. Do you have a modem? If you both have modems, then it is a simple matter to call them up and download/upload files. In fact, it comes with some database templates already set up for entering and massaging census data. You didn't describe what you want to do with the data, so I can't compare it with what I know of Sesame, but I think it's worth a look. From the Sesame manual introduction: "Sesame is a data management program for historical and genealogical research. It is an excellent tool for research; it is designed for organizing, comparing, and analyzing historical information, and it is especially flexible in the transfer of information to and from other computers and applications." Sesame documents look deceptively like spreadsheets, in that they appear as rows and columns of "cells". Unlike a spreadsheet, whose strength is in numerical "what if" analysis, Sesame is designed to record and process the kind of free-form, messy numerical *and* textual data that is the bread and butter of genealogical research, but which doesn't fit neatly in the cell of a spreadsheet or the limited data field of a DBMS like FileMaker. Each column can be assigned attributes (e.g., a date), and (again unlike most spreadsheets) each cell can contain up to 65,535 characters. The great thing about this is that you can record your data as you find it without distorting it to fit in some limited data space: for Aunt Beverly's birthday you can enter "the family bible says she was born xx, but her gravestone says yy. The bible is probably right, because it is corroborated by her birth certificate, which says zz." Sesame was designed specifically for research, and messy data in particular. It's for helping with your actual, on-going research as opposed to polishing up your final, proven pedigree. And as mentioned above, it will accept or produce data files in a variety of formats (delimited text, GEDCOM, etc.) for the Mac, the PC, even the Casio B.O.S.S. handheld organizers. Sesame's available for the Mac and for PCs running Windows (sorry, all you 8088 fans), and while it isn't dirt cheap (something like $140?), it's a good value, I think. You may be able to find it locally, or you can order it from the publisher. Sesame is produced by: Commsoft, Inc. 7795 Bell Road / P.O. Box 310 Windsor, CA 95492-0310 (707) 838-4300 (800) 327-6687 While I am a satisfied user of Sesame, I'm not otherwise connected with Commsoft, Margaret Thatcher, or Mikhail Gorbachev, among others. -- ---------------------- Ted Swift tswift@well.sf.ca.us or, better yet, Ted_Swift@qm.sri.com "You bally well are informed, Jeeves!
