To get these files, ftp to hallc1.cebaf.gov with the username "anonymous". The files are in the directory "genealogy" and are named bk5a.zip bk5b.zip bk5c.zip Don't forget to transfer the files in binary mode. The three archive files were originally self extracting archives, but I converted them ZIP files as that seems to be the standard for PC files kept at FTP sites. This arangement is temporary until these files show up on one of the major PC FTP repositories. However, I am contemplating setting making this into an anonymous FTP site specializing in genealogy files. I would probably concentrate on programs, since the fine collection at vm1.nodak.edu is primarily text files. I would welcome comment/advise on this (through E-mail) to determine if such a FTP site would be desirable/used. I think a more realistic price would be ~$150, but lucky for us it isn't. I assume the LDS provides PAF at a no profit price - but I don't know why. This is not an endorsement for Family Tree Maker - I don't know anything about it. But I don't think it's fair to compare it to PAF based on price. In a msg of <23 Sep 91>, vahl scott gordon writes to All: Well Vahl I'll try and answer some or all of your questions, vsg> 1) Does GEDCOM have the capability to transfer comments, education, vsg> and occupation information? Or just the "vital statistics". Can't vsg> figure out how to get FHS to export anything but the vitals. GEDCOM will transfer all of your data, dates, places, notes, etc. It was developed by the Morman church to be used to transfer data between differant software packages. vsg> 2) Why is this "four generation" format such a standard? What if I vsg> want to produce a chart for 7 or 8 generations? I don't see how I can vsg> get a computer program to do it all on one chart. There's a vsg> compact format on FHS, but it doesn't look nearly as good as the "four vsg> generation" format. Basically, I think the reason is that 4 generations looks best on a sheet of paper. You can print more generations, by using a thing called a cascading pedigree. What this does is prints the first 4 generations on one page, numbers the last person in each line on that page starting with 2. It then provides a new page for each of those people. As an example my cascading pedigree contains 17 charts and dates back to the mid 1500's. Also, there are wallcharts that can be produced that contain a full pedigree. vsg> 3) I have lots of cousins, and lots of information from different vsg> married people in our family. It seems that all charts I've seen vsg> there any software that can do it? (it seems like it would be a vsg> hard problem so I'm not expecting that there is). Normally, people are interested in only there direct ancestors, but in my case I like to know about everyone. There are utilities that work of of Personal Ancestral File (PAF) that will produce a complete chart like you are looking for, but it can be LARGE. I started mine once and found out that it would cover an area of about 9 feet by 18 feet, I didn't print it. vsg> 4) Is there a summary anywhere out there of what kind of charts can vsg> be made by various software? For instance... I've heard that, say, vsg> there are "lots of chart tools" for, say, PAF. Is there a list vsg> somewhere that describes them so that I can see if one would be vsg> useful? Best thing here is to keep checking the GENSOFT echo, as more are added almost weekly. I have about 12 that I use. vsg> 5) Is there any particular order that I should be entering vsg> information in? Or does it matter? For instance, who should be #1? I started out with myself as #1, my wife as #2, my two boys as #3 & #4. But, it's basically a personal preferance. vsg> 6) If I wish to create a "book" of my family tree information out of vsg> group sheets, should I do this my starting with the oldest and vsg> would still be lots of overlap and the "leaves" of the tree (the kids) vsg> wouldn't be able to quickly see who all of their ancestors are. This one I'll leave to someone who has written a book. vsg> 7) An unrelated question: Anyone have any hints on researching vsg> genealogy in Italy? I can get a lot of information from my relatives, vsg> but I was wondering also if there are good records to be found there. I'm trying to figure this one out myself (BIGGIO/BISSIO). Let me know if you find a good way! vsg> 8) I've been able to transfer information between FHS and BK using vsg> GEDCOM 2.0. Can I be confident that this information will transfer vsg> to PAF without problem? I'd like to know before I enter in a whole vsg> bunch of information. The only thing that PAF may do that you won't like, is shorted place names. But, it will give you a list of any thing that it changes. I have been using PAF for 3 years without any problems and have GEDCOM'ed data to BK to print box charts, without a hitch. vsg> 9) Is there a standard format for group sheets that I should use? Or vsg> should I tailor it to my hearts desire? Are there pros and cons? Group sheets are basically formated the way you see them on PAF, I think that this is the accepted standard. Good luck and good hunting. I think that you will find GENSOFT and GENNEALOGY echos very usefull. I have heard much about DISGEN over the last 10 years, and it was exciting to get to see it. And for soemone who has been working with computer programs that speak English only for many years, there is a special thrill in seeing the menus come up in Swedish all over. I run my own genealogy data on PAF 2.1 for the MacIntosh. I have also played a little with Brother's Keeper version 5. So those programs are my frame of reference for evaluating DISGEN. DISGEN makes very effective use of color in the screen layout and menus. The colors are tasteful, and the screens are very readable (no yellow-on-green or similar bad choices here). The main family group screen is not as intuitively clear as Mac/PAF, and the help information is not as readily useful as in BK, so I had some finger trouble in navigating at first. I think I would get used to the DISGEN way pretty fast, though; especially with a mouse. The part I had looked most forward to trying, was DISBYT, which I had heard described as a generic utility program for genealogy data interchange. I had visions of automatic crossreferencing between two GEDCOM files, with intelligent choices of what to do with overlaps. It seems that I was wrong: DISBYT seems to be just the import/export options of DISGEN that have been split into a sperate program, just as in BK. I guess this must be in order to preserve precious address space on the PC. Furthermore, the GEDCOM option seemed to be broken. The dates in the GEDCOM file were in the peculiar Swedish format were last Christmas eve is 19901224. Not even DISBYT's own import routine would read these dates. I exported the whole file, and then imported it back in, and the only diagnostics I got were the bad dates, but afterwards, both the "flock" file and the configuration file were messed up and had to be rebuilt, because DISGEN would exit with "fatal error 201". The strongest feature of the program suite seems to be the concept of the flock file. I am not sure I understand the concept completely (maybe what follows is entirely wishful thinking). As I understand the flock file, it allows you to have virtual partitions in your data base, so that you could keep your wife's data in one file, and your own in a different file, and the data you got from cousin Mary in yet another file, while still allowing transparent cross-references between data in the separate files. This would be extremely handy. I have loaded all of my data into ONE PAF file, which now has around a thousand names, and which will probably grow to 3000 or so. This means that my hardcopy binder, which I take with me to the library, is now up to 3 4-inch binders, which is a pain in the you-know-what to lug around. I now wish that I had keps two separate files (or 4) with just the last two generations duplicated. I could then mhave merged them into one workfile when I needed to print combined pedigree charts, etc. But by now I fear it is too late to try to undo that choice. All in all, I think this is an OK program for Scandinavians to use, but it does not seem to have many advantages over BK5, which will soon be available with menus in your choice of language. / Lars Poulsen lars@CMC.COM Researching SCHNACK (Denmark), Higgins Rodgers Baggett Eskridge (TX, USA) -- / Lars Poulsen, SMTS Software Engineer CMC Rockwell lars@CMC.COM ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1991 00:07:30 GMT Reply-To: ROOTS-L Genealogy List Sender: ROOTS-L Genealogy List Comments: Warning -- original Sender: tag was NETNEWS@AUVM.AMERICAN.EDU From: Theodore John Swift Subject: Re: Brother's Keeper for Macintosh? > Does Brother's Keeper work on Macintosh, too? _Genealogical Computing_ has a directory of computer programs in their latest issue. No, it wasn't, but now we in DIS-Norway has got a copy of it and we are now building a database of Norwegian ancestors which people has registered with their programs like Disgen, PAF, Family Edge etc. (not to be confused with IGI, RHD or alike (RHD is the Norwegian History Registration Central (Registreringssentralen for Historiske Data))). Primarily, DISBYT accepts only files made by DISGEN, but it has now got another program which accept GEDCOM files. DISBYT is a group level aligning program which is a bit alike Tiny Tafels, but it isn't confused by Scandinavian letters as Tiny Tafel is. DISBYT compares data on parish niveau, and if it find that you have the same surname in the same parish in the same period, you get a hit. If both birth year and death year is the same as another earlier registered, you get a threestar hit and you will be noticed that you possibly has registered the same person as member so and so has registered. Because the capacity is limited, the service is primarily available to DIS-Norge members, but of course, if you have many Norwegian ancestors and is interested in computers and genealogy, why not join. Write me and I will give you full details. I hope that we later will be able have this service available also for other people than members of the DIS-organizations. I must also say that the DISBYT database is also available for Sweden. If you are interested, please tell me and I will try to give the details needed to use the service. Perhaps Bo Kleve in Linkoeping (who read this) also may be helpful with such searches (at least to give them further to Olof Cronberg in Vaxjo who has made the program). I don't know if the service is available yet in Denmark, but I would guess it soon will be. The program was demonstrated at the 5. Nordic symposia on Computers in Genealogy arranged at Brandbu near Oslo 25.-27. october where representants for Finland and Denmark also were present. I have only read this news group for a short while and may miss messages - to assure my receipt respond by email. My genealogy interest is in my cousins ( contemporaries ) as much as my ancestors; as such I prefer decendant charts to ancestor charts for presenting data in print. While Roots III appears to be a fine program with many nice features, for the money PAF is a very good program. One feature of PAF that I suspect may not be true of ROOTS III is the openess of its data structures. That is LDS will supply specs on the data / file structures on request. This allows one to write software to access this data easily. I have written routines which scan the data in descendant chart fashion and process / print data about individuals and families. I have for example produced 220+ column list that give 98% of the data in a one line per individual format (excluding notes) using indentation to show lineage links. I have also written code to list individuals who are not descendants (or spouses of descendants) of certain key ancestors. ( For example, other spouses of spouses of descendants who occasionally are included in my database.) This can be useful when partitioning the database or when creating a GEDCOM file of part of the data. Can ROOTS III do this? I use Family Records for the Mac, print a Descendants Chart to a text file (using imagesaver) and then import it into More. I got the idea from this message from David Magier magier@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu: "A nice solution I have found is to use a presentation software (for the Mac) called MORE (sorry I don't have the price and publisher details handy, pehaps someone else can fill in?). One feature of MORE is that it allows you to enter information in the form of an outline (i.e. with different amounts of line indentation indicating the different levels of the outline hierarchy). Once the outline is entered, you can then have MORE convert it into a nice branching TREE-CHART (which can be fine-tuned to have frames around the individual nodes, straight, angular or curved borders, fills, etc. etc. MORE also allows you to set whether you want your tree to be branching down, branching left, branching right, or branching up). This tree chart can then be exported as a PICT file, which can then be touched up, annotated, edited or adorned in your favorite graphics program to make nice family-TREE charts. I use this method as follows: I put all information for each individual on ONE LINE of the outline in MORE. (I include name, birth year, birth place, death year, death place), and use MORE's directional and organizational controls to move each line to the right amount of indentation to indicate the apporpriate generation. After I've got the whole lineage entered in this fashion, I turn it into a tree (I like rounded-rectangle boxes around the info for each individual, and I like downward branching trees to show descendants. The boxes are connected vertically to the parent node and horizontally to the siblings by nice lines generated by the program. The box size for each node can be set in the program: I like the boxes for each individual to be about 1.25" by 1", and I set my fonts [using a nice laser font] accordingly). MORE can handle large-multipage trees in this method, and I have generated such trees for lineages including more than 600 individuals [i.e. 600 boxes in the tree]. The ideal, of course, would be to find a genealogical software that could generate these charts directly, or, at least, could EXPORT the tab-delimited outline format so that it could be imported into MORE without having to retype anything... Hope this helps."
