Thanks to all of you who read this at least once, its very easy to notice from the messages on the net that many people do not read this, but we all thank the ones who do. I will be posting this message to ROOTS-L every month, hoping it will help answer some of the questions which are asked each day on the list. Many of these questions are answered in one of the following areas. It is a place where one can ask for help/assistance in finding information, or where it may it found. Many messages are passed through this LIST each day from those who have enough interest to ask or take the time to type a message requesting information. PLEASE NOTE THIS ! ! GENEALOG has more than 175 files, all of which are available to any user via regular mail. You may request a listing of the file be mailed to you by simply sending the following line to: LISTSERV@mail.eworld.com as the only text of a message. /files roots-L It normally only takes about ten minutes for the LISTSERV computer to reply, sending you a message with the entire listing of files. You may pick & choose the filenames of interest and to request a file just simply send the following line back to: LISTSERV@mail.eworld.com as the only text of a message. We will update this section when it is available. ROOTS-L Files are also available by anonymous FTP for users on the Internet. FTP to VM1.NODAK.EDU (134.129.111.1) with userid anonymous and your e-mail address as the password. Then enter CD ROOTS-L to access the ROOTS-L disk. You may use DIR to list files in various groups, Eg. DIR FAMILY.* and GET to retrieve the data, Eg. GET FAQ.INDEX. Please Note: LISTSERV expects the two parts of the file name to be separated with a space while FTP uses a period (.). If you have good Genealogical Information, please submit them ! New additions or corrections should be e-mailed directly to Rick Carpenter, gra_jrc@shsu.edu for evaluation for the inclusion on GENEALOG as a public file. The LISTSERV supports many more commands than you normally see here. Please read all this message before sending a change. Use the correct address. These are posted for your convenience. SIGNOFF ROOTS-L - to remove yourself from the list, no name is needed, but you do need to send it from the same computer where you subscribed REVIEW ROOTS-L - to get a list of subscribers names and email addresses who are currently subscribed QUERY ROOTS-L - to get the status of your entry on the list SET ROOTS-L NOMAIL - to remain on the list but not receive mail SET ROOTS-L MAIL - to resume receiving mail from the list SET ROOTS-L CONCEAL - to not report your address in a REVIEW SET ROOTS-L NOCONCEAL - to report your address in a REVIEW SET ROOTS-L REPRO - to receive a copy of msgs you post to ROOTS-L SET ROOTS-L NOREPRO - to not receive a copy of the message you send to the ROOTS-L list SET ROOTS-L DIGEST - to have the LIST send you only one (message) DIGEST each day containing all the ROOTS-L messages posted for that day (the message may be as large as 80,000 bytes) SET ROOTS-L INDEX to have the LIST send you an INDEX of msgs each day so you can 'pick and choose' which *Note* this option messages you want to see. Then you may is not currently request only those, and have them in a available. few minutes with a search JOB. d. By default, subscriptions are set to MAIL, NOCONCEAL, NOREPRO.
