Subject: How do I research Virginia Cherokee: WATKINS?
Sender: roots-in@rootsweb.com

Hello,

(I am posting this message to several individuals and several lists at once, so
please excuse the generic format.)

It has been rumored that this branch of the Wadkins/Watkins family was Cherokee
Indian, with the specific rumor that Hannah MINTON, daughter of Philip MINTON
and Levina WADKINS, was half-Indian. How might I confirm or deny this?

The information that I *do* know about this family is:

Mary WATKINS (born aft 1784, died 17 Jun 1853, buried on the H.G. Roberts farm,
Pulaski Co, KY) was married on 30 Apr 1803 in Washington Co, VA to Jacob
Campbell SURBER (born 17 Oct 1784 in VA, died 9 Apr 1844 in Pulaski Co, KY).
She was the daughter of David WADKINS and Hannah --?--.

In a deed dated 19 Jul 1803 in Washington Co, VA, her brother Benjamin WADKINS
settled the estate of his father and named the children Elizabeth WADKINS,
married to Alexander CROCKETT; Jane WADKINS married to --?--
McELHANEY/McKELLHANEY; Susanna WADKINS married to --?-- ALFORD; Levina WADKINS,
married to Philip MINTON; Hannah WADKINS, married to --?-- REEDY; Sarah
WADKINS, married to William BANKS; Martha "Matty" WADKINS (born 21 Sep 1783,
died ca Nov 1862 in Lawrence Co, Indiana), married to Ebenezer "Ezer" CLEVELAND
(born ca 1782, died 27 Oct 1853 in Lawrence Co, IN); David WADKINS; and "Mary
Serber late Mary Watkins."

Jacob, mistakenly listed as SURBEN, and Mary were living in Washington Co in
1810, where in addition to them the census lists 3 boys under 10 and one female
over 45. It is not known who this female was, probably the mother of Jacob, as
Mary's mother Hannah is not listed in a 5 Apr 1798 land transaction in
Washington County between David Wadkins of Jefferson Co, TN and Edward and
Nancy McGINNIS. Jacob and Mary were married by minister William Brundige of
St. Clair's Bottom Baptist Church in Smyth Co, VA.

David Wadkins was in Washington Co on 10 Dec 1785 where he signed a petition,
and in Jefferson Co, TN for the above mentioned 1798 land sale.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Here's an additional piece of info that I am *not* sure about:

There was a David Watkins who received a Revolutionary War Land Warrant (#4453)
of 100 acres in KY on 4 Aug 1788 for serving 3 years in the Virginia
Continental Line as a private. I do not know if this David is connected to the
above family or not.

Thanks,
Rick
