Subject: dilemma

Hi Rooters:

I have Family Tree Maker and have a question for anyone that has the same.
I am researching my paternal side of the family. The family came from
France.....possibly immigrating to the U.S. from Baden, Germany. I have
done research at the Family History Center and copied all the microfiche
that had under my maiden name, so I could at my leisure, check for any
connections.
My great grandfathers name was Jacob Jacquin. When my grandfather was born
Jacob was a very old man and already had a grown family (by his first wife).
I believe he had a son (by his first wife) named August Louis. According
to the 1900 census, August was born in April 1864, in Germany. His
great granddaughter told me that according to the family, from where
he lived, he could see three countries. On the LDS records, I found
a Francois Louis born in April of 1864 in Meurthe-Et-Moselle,Audun-Le-Roman.
Well, Meurthe-Et-Moselle is right on the border of Belgium, France and
Germany. Now, for my dilemma.....If I find that August, was really Francois
and if he was a son of Jacob (records show his father as being "Francois")
should I list him in Family Tree as the family has always known both of
them, or should I list them with the name that they were given at birth.
As you know, if you have Family Tree, you can enter an aka.....but, as you
also probably know it shows it as a separate entity. Is there a way
to avoid this? I want to do it correctly so that family members in the
future won't have as much difficulty as I am having. I have a feeling
that when Jacob came to this country, he may have "Americanized" his
name. I haven't figured out or found how August is connected, but did
discover tonight that his great granddaughter is my cousin....
she and I compared stories about a particular uncle that was a fireman
on a ladder truck in Newark. He had an accident and was in the hospital
for the rest of his life, as the accident left him disabled. It is one
and the same "uncle". I was tickled to death to find one side of the
family I knew nothing about. Before I discovered this, there were too
many similarities not to be related.

Anyway, if you can offer any suggestions on how to enter it on the
family tree, I would really appreciate it.

Also, is anyone available for a lookup in Monmouth, New Jersey?

Thanks for your help!!
Elaine Jacquin Langbehn
