I've forgotten who first asked recently about using a Civil War Union 
vet's GAR membership records for genealogy, and I've forgotten what 
kind of info was posted re: URLs for information. 

But in case you missed that dialog, I just found one that seems to have
all the pertinent answers for genealogists to milk the GAR for all it
can give. Try the "Grand Army of the Republic Homepage" at:

Notice that this URL does *not* start with "www.*****" and I
copied this straight off the source/address line on the screen 
while the page was up, and checked it again against a printout.
This homepage provides literally scores of Civil War resource
sites on the web, most having nothing to do with the GAR.
