There is a very good account of this in a biography of Emma Smith, Joseph's first wife I read some years ago. (I am not RLDS or LDS) The headquarters of this groups are in Independence, MO, and they are quite strong around here. Joseph Smith, Jr., Joseph and Emma's son, was one of the early leaders and many of his descendents have been president of the church. As I understand it, it was their contention that Joseph never authorized plural marraige, that this was an invention of Brigham's. This group never practiced it. In other ways they are very similar to LDS, using the same scriptures, etc. I do not know if they particularly value genealogy as LDS members do--the local genealogy club doesn't seem to have many, though we have an active rlds church here.
