I joined Roots-L simply to do three things:
    1. Hopefully, find some other people who might be researching, the
old fashioned way,the same Surnames I am.

    2. Get some leads which might help me find more places to look for my
own surname history.

    3. Help others find data and places to look for their surnames if I
have information that will help them.

I've scored 100%! I correspond daily--sometimes 2/3 times per day--with
at least six people researching my lines. One person sent me a thick
descendancy file on a common surname and six floppy disks!

I've been able to send GEDCOM disks to others.
In another case, two of us are feverishly trying to put together our
respective surname line to attempt to arrive at a Mayflower descendant
for my wife's line.

The enriching "conversation" I have with many people directly has more
than fulfilled my expectations. After all.....genealogical research
still requires documenting sources, trudging thru cemeteries, pouring
thru dusty books in county courthouses, finding a will you can't read,
and all the other things we go through for the love of the hunt. Roots-L
just adds an extra dimension of a lot more people going thru the same
thing I am, with no guarantees, and just enjoying the trip.

Of course, there's always the sourpuss that hates the "threads", but
that's why God made delete keys.
