Announcing "Saint John Genealogies - An Internet Resource Website".

I would like to invite you to participate in the creation of this important
and useful website. It is still in its infancy stage, and new links,
surnames, queries, etc. are being added already. If you have St. John, NEW
BRUNSWICK, Canada ancestry, this is a website you will want to hold on to.
Watch it grow!

If you have resources which you feel is of relevance or value St. John
Genealogies, I would be pleased to add your URL.

Historically, Saint John was an important port city, one of the busiest ports
on the Eastern Coast of North America--handling the same volume as many of
the ports further down the coast, from New York, Boston, Philadelphia to New
Orleans. It is also a significant city given its ties to Ireland, the
Loyalists and of course the Acadian population. In addition, it was a
strategic British military post, which kept an eye on the goings on to the
south for decades.

As the website grows, census information will be included along with cemetery
transcripts and connections to genealogical sources and research tips. Street
maps, wards, and important landmarks will be illustrated in maps at the
website. Social history will also be explored--giving references to important
events such as the arrival of Champlain, the foundation of the city, the
quarantine station at Partridge Island, the Saint John Fire, the foundation
of various religious and relief organizations, Crown Land records in nearby
areas and much more. This will hopefully provide some context to the massive
amount of information which is becoming available both in the Maritimes and
throughout Canada. Immigration patterns will also be examined, with ship
lists, dates, names, etc. If you have a connection to this city, you will
surely want to participate by adding your information and checking back
regularly as it expands.
