Subject: [ROOTS-L] School Records

I don't know how much information is actually in the school records.  I do know that the records from one-room schools in Saline County, Kansas have been found in the basement of the Courthouse, put there possibly by the County Clerk's office.  At the time these schools were in existence, the teachers answered to a County Superintendent, and for many years the 7th and 8th grade students had to take a County test before they were admitted into a high school.

In Hardin County, Iowa, the country school records were given to me by a pastor's wife from a Friends church who found them for me and sent them.  We had not found actual proof for my grandmother's being except in those records and in an 1895 state census where her name was misspelled.  Her birth was 1878 before state records were kept and somehow we were never able to find her or her parents in earlier censuses.
