Subject: [ROOTS-L] More on school records

School records could prove invaluable if
only to prove the family lived in the area between
census records.
I spent months trying to locate school records
for Los Angeles, California for the period around
1890-1895. I knew what part of L.A. the family
was likely to have lived in. I drove many miles
to look at original city directories and listed all
the schools contained for those years. The directories
listed the addresses, so I was able to locate where
the schools were on an old map.
Dealing with the L.A. County Archives where the school
records might have been placed was a headache.
I was told in so many words, even if they had them,
I couldn't look at them, because of privacy reasons.
I only wanted to know if the girls were living in L.A.
at the time and if the records confirmed the fathers
name it would help a twenty year search.
I think school records are an overlooked source but
old ones are probably very rare.
