Subject: [ROOTS-L] Stone Masons in Quebec

In searching for my mother's birthplace in April 1900 (definitely not
"Vermont" as claimed in her Social Security application!), I find her
family in Ancestry in the 1911 Canadian Census in Dist. 200, S.
Dist. 8, ED 3, Town of Coaticook (Stanstead) p. 17 (under her father,
Philias Gagne, chef ("Head" in English, of course). Family lore says
they came from St. Joseph-Levis, but I can't make any headway at all
in that direction. Philias was born 1856, according to the 1911 Census.

Question: Are there records of stone masons available? And, pardon my
ignorance, but under the employment column, it says 'Batisse'. Is
that 'self-employed'?

Thanks for your help.

ps: Thanks again to those who helped with the "Perch River" query -
he's been found!
