Mike,

Even an updated SSDI would not necessarily help you, as a  death does not
appear in the SSDI unless it has been reported to the Social  Security
Administration, and that's not likely unless the individual was  receiving SS
benefits.  Most 56-year-olds wouldn't be.

Do you  have the names of any survivors that might appear in her obituary?

Actually the deaths of most 56 year olds WOULD be reported to SSA by the  
funeral home if the deceased had worked under covered employment.  There  could 
be a lump sum death payment due a surviving spouse and/or survivor  benefits 
due surviving children or spouse.  It is even possible that  someone who died at 
56 could have been receiving disability benefits from SSA  prior to their 
death--there are many reason why the death would probably have  been reported.
