All of the major commercial genealogy software programs (including Family
Tree Maker, RootsMagic, Legacy, and The Master Genealogist) can import and
export GEDCOM-format files, so that should address your compatibility
question.

Exporting a GEDCOM-format file is a similar process in most of these
programs. In the specific case of Legacy, go to the File menu and choose
"Export To" and then "GEDCOM file". Then follow directions on the screen
that appears.
