Subject: [ROOTS-L] Occupation "Fresco Artist"?

"Fresco" refers to painting on wet plaster (or sometimes dry
plaster) but what would a "fresco artist" actually do for a living?

In the 1900 census of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the household of
Ferdinand Firks included several sons. August (age 23) was listed
as a fresco artist. Herman (18) was a laborer in a lumber mill.

In 1910 August was not in the household but his brother Herman
was listed as a fresco artist. In both 1900 and 1910, other
family members worked as laborers and in knitting mills.

In 1920 August had his own household and was listed as a decorator.
Herman was living with his in-laws and was a laborer.

I doubt August and Herman had a lot of education. Maybe a fresco
artist worked in construction, making murals on interior walls?

(I'm interested in this family because a younger brother, Frank
Firks, married my relative Mabel Botteron.)

adTHANKSvance!
Carol Botteron (that's French Swiss)
