Actually I think that in general people have acted the same way for
years. Some are interested in family history and want to reach out to
possible new cousins. Others are simply not interested or too busy or have
problems in their family they want to keep to themselves.. Then there are
some who have always felt no one had any business asking questions of them.
Perhaps this is more prevalent now.

Again, most of us might tone down what we are searching and start with
ourselves and our children and other known living relatives and move back to
people who are not living. Depending on our ages, there may be lots of
information in census and newspaper obituaries to get a good start without
needing to hunt for some long lost cousin who may or may not be interested.
When you do stumble upon someone else interested, they may have contacts
they can introduce us to.

It's always frustrating to keep contacting people who do not respond.
But most of us can work on older generations, post them at WorldConnect, and
usually after a period of time, a person with a similar interest will
respond with an email or a post-em note on a WorldConnect database.
Patience is really a tremendous asset in this hobby. One can also search the
shared databases for possibly connected people. People who have already
shared online are probably at least interested in genealogy and may share if
you contact them. But then again they may not. I try to answer all emails
addressed to me, but I know I miss a few depending on whether I have time to
answer the day the email comes.

One need not give up looking for living people, but other than immediate
family it is probably not the best place to start. The more we can offer
others information first may have an effect on whether they will provide us
with something else.
