Annette & all,

For years I've been scanning all types of things and photograph-
ing people, headstones, memorabilia, even copying photos, paintings,
pages from reference books etc.

I use Family Tree Maker (FTW.) I store all of these digitized items
in the scrapbook for the person, or family of the person the item
pertains to. Copies of census pages for each family are in their scrap-
book.

Using this method I can quickly locate the person, go to the
scrapbook and either print a copy or copy and paste the item into
my graphics editor program (Photo Impact.) From their I can man-
ipulate it and print or save again.

My new computer has two monitors so I can open two FTW
databases and cut and paste from one scrapbook to the other.

I also backup my FTW databases and the original scans to 2
DVDs, one of which I send to my daughter in another state.

I set my digital camera to one resolution below the best and
my scanner to 300 dpi. I use two graphics formats depending upon
whether I would be able to "do over" or not. When I'm at Aunt
Alices' house I know that a lot of her stuff will be discarded or given
to her sons who have no interest and will probably be lost. Those
items I save in BMP format at 300 dpi. Other things I scan at 200
dpi and save in JPG 90% resolution. I scan only in color or grey
scale, never black and white. The only items that are black and white
are downloaded census pages.

This has worked well for me over the years.

Good luck,

Jerry Hale
Deltona, FL
