Sherman (b. 9 Sep 1837 or 1838 in Shenandoah County, Virginia). Is there anyone with Shenandoah County resources that might be able to provide some direction for me. It looks like Michael's generation may have been the beginning of the "Sherman" spelling. There is a possibility the variations may run from "Showman", "Shawman" "Shireman" and other variations in the earlier year but I am not sure. During the Civil war years, it looks like Michael was in Wisconsin and enlisted in a Wisconsin unit "Fifth Wisconsin Light Artillery Battery".
