Subject: [ROOTS-L] William Roscoe & Beulah Whitehead - need help...bit of a mystery

ANSWER TO BELOW:

Michelle,
I went to the GNIS site (see URL & hyperlink below) and asked for Scotland
in Louisiana.

There is a Populated Place called Scotland in East Baton Rouge Parish (I
think that's what they call them in Louisiana and not County). There is also a
"Historical" populated place in Concordia Parish.
Hope this helps, Gretchen

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

From: "Phoenix" <phoenix@nova1.net>
Subject: [ROOTS-L] William Roscoe & Beulah Whitehead - need help...bit of a
mystery

I am trying to locate the maiden name of my ggrandmother and figure out an
apparent discrepancy. If anyone could do a look up I would appreciate it so
much.

This is the info I have:
Her name is Beulah Mae (Whitehead) b. 24 Jan 1907, Louisiana – d. 20 Apr
1994, Longview, Gregg Co. Tx
Married William Roscoe Whitehead b. 02 Jun 1904, Louisiana – d. 1984 Jan,
Longview, Gregg Co.

I presume they married in Louisiana. The 1930 census states that her
parents were born in Louisiana. It also states WR Whitehead’s parents as
being born in Louisiana. The census cites 2 children: William R. Whitehead,
Jr. (my grandfather), and Minnie Whitehead, both born in Louisiana.

Here is the part that is presenting itself as a mystery to me: I have a
formal military photo of my grandfather (WR Whitehead, Jr.) taken when he
was 18. On the back a great deal is written about where he was stationed,
et al. In the first paragraph it says this though:
“William Roscoe Whitehead – 18 yrs”
“son of Mr. And Mrs. WR Whitehead – Scotland”

Then it goes on to say that he is stationed in India, etc. Scotland
obviously is not Louisiana. Any ideas that might help explain the seeming
discrepancy between the census and the photo?

As usual, any help or pointers at all will be helpful.

Michelle
