Subject: [ROOTS-L] RE: 1920's-30's Merchant Marine Records

ANSWER TO BELOW:

Yvonne,
The military has records back thru the Revolutionary War. Some records are
better than others, especially for the Civil War (Union records are
good.....Confederate records need to be found mostly thru the state they served in).

I went to Google and asked for Merchant Marine Academy. Here's the URL and
hyperlink.

According to them, while the Academy was not dedicated until 1943, Maritime
training is more than a Century old in this country.

You might try to check out this site and then possibly Email them. They have
a museum and possibly they might be able to direct you and help you in your
search.

Subject: 1920's-30's Merchant Marine Records

How would I find Merchant Marine Records from the 20's and 30's?? Records
weren't kept by the military like they are now, and there was no academy to
attend back then as far as I know. I'm looking for Belgian-born Joseph
Leemans who worked on a cargo ship between Europe and the US during that
time. His boat was torpedoed by Germans in the N Atlantic Region. He
recovered in a British hospital then sent home to NJ. I would think there
would be some sort of medical record, or something I could find, but I don't
even know the name of the boat he was on. I need help, where do I start??
