Records weren't kept by the military like they are now, and there was no academy to attend back then as far as I know. I'm looking for Belgian-born Joseph Leemans who worked on a cargo ship between Europe and the US during that time. His boat was torpedoed by Germans in the N Atlantic Region. He recovered in a British hospital then sent home to NJ. I would think there would be some sort of medical record, or something I could find, but I don't even know the name of the boat he was on. I need help, where do I start??
