Iva, please do not take offense at the suggestions I'm going to give you.
If you are 'stumped six ways from Sunday,' it may be that you are not using
some of the most basic genealogical techniques.

I always implore people to give us something to begin with --- and if you do
not want to give your full name, that's fine. Iva will do --- but where the
heck are you located? What town & county. Why do I ask? Because if I knew
where you are located I might be able to suggest a library, archives, etc. -
or even some society or individual who I feel could help you. Not always,
but you don't want to miss the possibility. And, if you are in Texas
(primary area of your research) or in some other state, it would probably
make a difference on where I might direct you.

Do your homework . be sure of name spellings & locations: example <Laverna,
Texas> incorrect spelling, although I realize you are quoting an obit .
and you should give county names .. Not ask your reader to look it up .. ALL
records - even the US censuses are access on county level. ** your research
is at this point after 1900 TX but in any case, may I suggest the following
standbys that every serious genealogical research should have on hand right
next to their computer --- and use:

Everton's The Handy Book is a good place to start, coupled with Kathleen W.
Hinckley's "Your Guide to the Federal Census for genealogists, researchers,
and family historians" - Thorndale & Dollarhide's "Map Guide to the U.S.
Federal Censuses, 1790-1920" and William Dollarhide's "The Census Book, A
Genealogist's Guide to Federal Census Facts, Schedules and Indexes."

Cull your query down to facts --- obits are great and you have a lot of info
but your normal reader will not wade through it - and may miss important
facts that could help you. USE TIME LINES (see below) . an excellent
research technique - especially when you're stuck!

Check the Internet for useful sites - many county clerks have online
databases. If not then check the Internet for genealogy sites for that
county, or check state records. Almost all Texas counties have had records
microfilmed; check to see if what you need has been done.

Salvera & Londis [?] Rodriguez. "Legends she has heard are that Slavera's
father or grandfather may have come from Spain." There may be a grain of
truth in this since the Spanish were in Mexico and ruled for a time.

"The Rodriguez family may have changed the family name during the time
of Pancho Villa." ** so when was Francisco "Pancho" Villa prancing around??
1911-1920 one of the foremost general in Mexico. " This was after the
birth of Slavera's on, Manuel." 1913-1914 Villa was president of the
Mexican state of Chihuahua, and 1916 made a raid on Columbus, NM. Often families pick
up on some prominent historical figure to attach the family to in some way. Not
to say that it does not sometimes have a grain of truth --- the reason for
historical research along with the genealogy. In this instance, I see
nothing about Pancho Villa that would have a reason for the family to change
their name .. Unless by chance Slavera Rodriguez had served in his army,
etc. under a different surname - not likely since the records say he had a
son b. in TX in 1900.

If this family was in Mexico and crossed legally there are border
immigration records available --- but tie down the specifics before trying
to locate where they came from before found in Texas.

TIME LINES .....

"Manuel/Manual/Emanuel Rodriguez (sr) son of Slavera and Londis
Rodriguez. 1900 Jan 13 b. in Lavernia, Wilson Co TX" ** birth
certificate? baptismal record?

** so one would hope that someplace he would show on the 1900 census - with
his parents and, if older siblings, with them --- do you know of any
siblings?

"1940 Aug 16 md. Mary Ann Castillo in Texas ** in Mary Ann's obit you
have a clue on where to look . most likely in her home town/county

"was a migrant worker for most of his life. ** may be hard to trace in
that from 1940 to 1954 you're not going to be able to check US census
records 1954 moved to Montana, settling in the Bridger & Fromberg - both
Carbon Co

"1970 moved to Billings, Yellowstone Co MT"

** while the last open census available is 1930, do not overlook tax rolls
and other records to help establish residency, financial/social standing in
the community, even family info by the names associated in the records,
etc...

"1991 Aug 22 died Billings, Yellowstone Co MT

" survived by his wife, MaryAnn of Billings:

" six children, James Rodriguez,Sr, of Billings
Manuel Rodriguez, Jr. of Texas
Rosa Whitcher of Billings
Frank Rodriguez of Billings
Mary Espinoza of Fromberg
John Rodriguez of Billings
two adopted children, Lupe Mahey of Germany

 "Roy Rodriguez of Washington...."

** located and check with as many children as possible. Often you can ask
the same question of siblings and get different answers .

** the two adopted children are not blood line but don't overlook that they
just might have family info - depending on the age when adopted - and if by
chance these were blood line of a sibling of Manuel or Mary Ann

".Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary..." ** be sure to see what records they
have; you might be surprised

".services from Our Lady of Guadalupe church" ** check the church
records

"Rite of Committal in the Holy Cross Cemetery" ** and the cemetery
records; often they have info slightly different that the funeral home
____________________

"Mary Ann Rodiguez, 84 of Billings"

Mary Ann (Maria) Castillo -"The Montana death record has her as Maria
Castillo, which the family has confirmed to be her birth name." ** Maria
Anglicized to Mary Ann - so when asking for official records, especially
from the church, be sure to give both.. There are several interesting
listing on the 1920 Guadalupe Co TX census for Maria Castillo - and you
need to check other close spellings - Castillio, Castello -

"1914 Mar 25 b. McQueeney, Guadalupe Co TX" ** birth certificate? or
what?

"Mary was raised and educated in McQueeney; worked as a seamstress with
her grandmother - probably in McQueeney" - look for her on the 1920
census.

Several Maria

1940 Aug 16 md. Manuel Rodriguez, [sr[ --- most likely in Guadalupe Co

"children: see husband's info above .." Try to obtain birth
certificates from each of them .. There no doubt will be family clues on
each one .unless they were all b. in same place, it is a good way to track migrational
movements

"03 Dec 1998 Thursday afternoon, d. in Billings, Yellowstone Co MT
at Parkview Convalescent Center."

".In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by several brothers
and sisters" - try to locate . 'cluster genealogy' will help take you back
further than Mary Ann ...

"Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist -- Alderson Chapel
with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery" ** again check all three for
info.

"The sons are not at all forthcoming, including the father of the lady I'm
trying to help." So you are helping a family member? If so, they may have
more info than they think . photographs can give clues, for instance.
Invitations, letters, etc..

"I have looked at every name in the 1900 census and most in the 1920 for
Wilson County, Texas, looking for either a Rodriguez or Castillo family with
names that fit." But by the above the Castillo family is probably in
Guadalupe Co; not Wilson.

"Having worked with migrants, I realize it is hard to track them when they
are working and most censuses have been taken after they start their yearly
treks."

** Even so, have you tried using the Institutional Soundex? Not only does
this soundex the institutions such as jail, hospital, sanitariums, schools,
orphanages, but also hotels - and often large ranches and farms that are
well known by name.

Hope this has been of some help --
