Subject: [ROOTS-L] Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. born in Texas

Never thought I'd be asking for help in this forum!

Looking for ancestral information on Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. and Mary
Ann

Castillo Rodriguez. Have nothing but two funeral cards to go on.

Verbatim; Manual Rodriguez, Sr., beloved father and husband, left this

world on August 22, 1991. He was born January 13, 1900 in Laverna, Texas,

the son of Slavera and Londis Rodriguez. He was a migrant worker for most

of his life. He married Mary Ann Castillo in Texas on August 16, 1940. He

moved to Montana in 1954, settling in the Bridger and Fromberg area. He had

lived in Billings since 1970. He is survived by his wife, MaryAnn of

Billings: six children, James Rodriguez,Sr, of Billings, Manuel Rodriguez,

Jr. of Texas, Rosa Whitcher of Billings, Frank Rodriguez of Billings, Mary

Espinoza of Fromberg, John Rodriguez of Billings: two adopted children, Lupe

Mahey of Germany and Roy Rodriguez of Washington.....Michelotti-Sawyers

Mortuary.....at our Lady of Guadalupel with Rite of Commital in the Holy

Cross Cemetery.

Verbatim; Mary Ann Rodiguez, 84 of Billings, passed away Thursday

afternoon, December 3, 1998, at Parkview Convalescent Center. She was born

in McQueeney, Texas on March 25, 1914.

Mary was raised and educated in McQueeney, Texas and following her

education, worked as a seamstress with her grandmother. On August 16, 1940,

she married Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. Mary and Manuel moved to Fromberg, Montana

in 1968 and on to Billings in 1972, where they resided since. Manuel

preceded her in death on August 22, 1991 in Billings. ......In addition to

her husband, she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Survivors.....(see above, minus the two adopted)....Michelotti, Sawyers&

Nordquist Alderson Chapel with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.

The Montana death record has her as Maria Castillo, which the family
has

confirmed to be her birth name. Laverna is probably La Vernia, Texas, as

this is not too far from McQueeney. The sons are not at all forthcoming,

including the father of the lady I'm trying to help.

Legends she has heard are that Slavera's father or grandfather may
have

come from Spain. The Rodriguez family may have changed the family name

during the time of Pancho Villa.

I have looked at every name in the 1900 census and most in the 1920

for Wilson County, Texas, looking for either a Rodriguez or Castillo family

with names that fit. Nowhere can I find this family in any year. Emanuel is

a common name in the family and 'Manuel, Jr.' says his name is Emanuel

(or Emmanuel). A Mexican friend of mine who works as an interpreter and

translator cannot imagine what 'Londis' proper name might have been, but

assures me that 'Slavera' is a proper name. It has occurred to me to use

‘Lourdes’ and “Leonides’. Having worked with migrants, I realize it is hard

to track them when they are working and most censuses have been taken after

they start their yearly treks.

I've tried this six ways from Sunday and I'm stumped.
