Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Can't find my grandfather

You do not say when your grandfather was born. If he was born between 1873 and 1900, he was required to fill out a draft registration card for WWI. You should also consider the SSI Death Index. Keep in mind that there may variations in spelling of his first and/or last name, so you might try several variations unsuccessfully before getting a hit. He may have anglicized his name as Joe, for example, or Jack or Jock. Mussi might be an abbreviated version of a longer family name. Don't neglect to do searches on your grandmother's name either.

Did you check state census records? New York had a state census taken in 1905 and another in 1915.

I did notice that there is a Marco Mussi in the 1910 US census in Syracuse Ward 9, Onondaga, NY. He is listed as a 38 y.o. shoemaker, b. in Italy. You might do a little research on him. If this was your grandfather's cousin, you might stumble across something that would help locate your grandfather.

Best of luck.

Subject: Can't find grandfather

My paternal grandfather, Giacomo Mussi, came to the U.S. in 1902. He came
through Ellis Island and I have sent for and received information from them.
I know, according to these records that he was going to Syracuse, New York
to be with his cousin, Marco Mussi, who had come over from Italy earlier. He
came to Syracuse as a mason.

My grandmother, Ermelinda Clerici came over in 1906 to marry Giacomo. Donšt
know if they ever married or not but they did have four children. My problem
lies with the fact that I canšt find him once he allegedly arrived in the
U.S. He does not show up on any census records. My father was born in 1914
and said that his father died when he was about 5 (that would make it 1919
or so).

Any suggestions as to how I can find this man? I live in Missouri now, not
Syracuse, so travel is, pretty much, out of the question.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide.
