Often the terms seem to be used interchangeably and perhaps the terms
differ from place to place. When I go to a county courthouse in NYS to look
up property exchanged between ancestors, I ask for land records. When most
of us suggest people search land records we are referring to individuals
buying and selling property from one another. In fact I remember seeing
"Land Records" printed on the covers of some of the old record books. The
descriptions on the deeds in the land record books tell how the property is
bounded by neighbors and may use reference points such as trees, fences or
other physical descriptions. Sometimes when the property is exchanged from
one family member to family member the family relationship is described.
One should not overlook land records when researching their families.
