Subject: [ROOTS-L] Land Records

Hi:  My grandparents show up in both the 1910 and the 1920 census for Kalispell, Montana, it states in both census that they owned their home free and clear.  I know this is true, because the property was left to a now deceased relative.  But when I tried to find their land records, they said their wasn't any.  How could this be? Wouldn't they have had to pay taxes? Any advise, of where else I can look, would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks
