Subject: [ROOTS-L] School Records

The local school district here does have the records for most of the classes from all schools on computer. I was told, when I asked for my own records a couple of years ago, that those records come under the privacy laws and therefore were not released without a court order or other legal document. This was mainly to protect those people who were adopted, not living with either parent, child abuse, or other extenuating circumstances. I would imagine there could be a lot of information that should not be released. I think a site could be set up for school records like those of the census, only those records of 1930 and before. The school districts usually are fairly short-staffed due to budget constraints, so that must be taken into consideration too. When I checked with a lawyer on this subject, school records on the internet could lead to some very lucrative lawsuits! Mary in Washington
