If your father remembers the area in which your great grandparents lived, 
you could check the census for that area and time period that would list 
them.
If you have the grandparents place of birth and you have the date of birth, 
you could check the census records for that time period and place and should 
find the grandparent listed as a child with her/his parents.
If it was a city, you could check the local directories for that last name.
