Problem with the Censuses are they could say Germany or a dozen other areas. I checked for both Joh and Geo in 1870, 1880 & 1900. Was hoping the 1900 Census (which gives the year of immigration) would lead me to him but no luck there. However, if I found your Hummel, the month of immigration that you stated was off. The year and the ship and the name matched. NOTE: If you would like the images of the ship's manifest let me know, I have it saved. It did state he was going to New York but that really doesn't always prove to be the case.
