Subject: [ROOTS-L] Splitting your files

Marilynn,

I agree with everything said by Margaret Scheffler. After all we have found
that we are distant cousins with Gates ancestors.

I would also like to add my own reasons for thinking it over very carefully
before splitting you data file. I used to have eight different main files
plus some other files with data from other people. I always put GEDCOMs
received from others in separate files until I review them. I exclude files
of that nature from my discussions here. I'm talking only about your main
files.

I went for years with all those files. I had my main file with my immediate
family, my descendants, my ancestors, and my wife's ancestors. In addition
to this file, I kept all of my parents descendants in one file, all of my
wife's parents descendants in another file, and had separate files for all
of the descendants of my grandparents and great grandparents. I also had
similar files for my wife's grandparents and great grandparents.

For the reasons Margaret stated, pedigrees could not be completely put
together from the separate files and I found that the descendants were
common between several different sets of the grand and great grandparents.
Keeping it all updated was a nightmare.

When I developed the GenCharts for PAF program, I found that I could not
gather the information I wanted from the separate files. So I started the
laborious task of combining my data files into one main file. It took a lot
of time and effort. I'm still finding an occasional duplicate individual,
but a bigger task was combining all the sources and notes and weeding out
the duplicates there.

So, based on my experience, I would consider the future very carefully
before splitting your file.

Incidentally, anyone can review the GenCharts for PAF program products at
www.familyhistoryguide.com. The lists and charts this program produces, are
something that every PAF user will want to see.
