I tracked who I believe was your William J. from 1850 thru 1920. All Censuses were in Patrick County Virginia. Most of the latter were Dan River, Patrick County. In the 1850 Census William and his family are living next door to another John Hancock, age 63 and wife Elizabeth age 62 both born Virginia. Might want to check, this is possibly William's grandparents! I will send you the 1850 census personally. He was not in the 1930 census nor was his wife. Several of his possible children are still living in Dan River in 1930 however. At one census he stated he had been married twice. There is a story in the Danville Bee on September 12, 1927 of a William Hancock being very ill from a rattlesnake bite. The story indicated possibly a residence of Patrick Springs VA which is also in Patrick County. It did not mention a middle initial and the only reference to a wife was Mrs. Hancock so have no idea if this is your William. Nice long story tho!! The below seems to be the second marriage.
