Thank you!  I should have mentioned that I don't have Ancestry, just 
Heritage Quest, which (as far as I can tell) doesn't allow wildcards 
and has only the head of household indexed.  I'll look at that 1870 
listing you found.
Also I'll try to find a marriage record in the hope that it will list 
her parents.

I have some German ancestors and have noticed the middle-name 
phenomenon in males at least.  I have a Johann Sebastian who finally 
surfaced under the name "Bast."
