This was the obituary as it was prepared by the mortuary before being sent to the newspaper?

If so, that is a reasonable assumption. It would probably would be sent to NY, and that may have been the
notation to tell the editor why it was sent. It is possible that the SF paper would have telegraphed the
obit to NY.

I am surprised that there is no mention of New York in the obit, however, but they "did do things
differently in those days" <G>.

Now, if this was a part of the obituary after it was published in whatever paper published it, I have no
idea what it meant, unless the newspaper staff sent the papers to New York and expected them to notice!

It's not like they had Reuters or AP.

|I have a copy of an 1888 obituary notice for one John Higgins,
|who dies at age 14. Along with some details about his parents,
|is the notation "New York papers please copy." Is it safe to
|take this as an indication that the obituary notice is to be
|published in the New York papers, and this means that there
|may be Higgins or related family members still living in New
|York? Any ideas? I don't want to make the mistake of just "assuming."
