There are 2795 listings just for the post offices of Nebraska alone. I did a search for the names of some towns which no longer exist or have been renamed and every one of them came back indicating the county in which the post office was located. The really helpful thing about this site though is that the database contains the names and county locations of post offices which were not located in an actual town. Your relatives may have said they were from "place x" and you have nearly pulled your hair out trying to locate it--when you discover it was never an actual town at all--just the name of the local post office which someone was operating out of their front parlor! The owner of the ~United States Post Offices~ web site indicates the database is a work in progress and some states are not as well covered as others. However if you have research in multiple states I'm sure you will still find his web site useful. You might even be interested in purchasing some of the covers he has for sale! BTW, I'd like to invite everyone doing Nebraska research to join our new discussion group/mailing list.
