Years ago when I was working my first job (out of high school) I
rented a sleeping room in a private home. I was considered a lodger.
The landlady did not serve meals.

I ate all my meals at a boarding house - one that sometimes kept
roomers, but most times just provided hot meals, served family style.
I bought a meal ticket for 30 days. It cost only $15 for one meal
ea. day for a month. They were generous meals too. Imagine today
being able to eat on only $15 or $20/mo!

My Dad did the same thing. He was a railroad locomotive engineer and
when he had to stay out of town, he and the other railroaders, rented
rooms usually in small hotels and ate their meals at boarding houses.
