Subject: [ROOTS-L] private files online

In a message dated 5/8/2006 10:01:18 A.M. Eastern Standard Time,
ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com writes:

At some later point, Ancestry's parent company bought genealogy.com.
Ancestry does not have those sort of terms, not back then, not now, but they
did acquire access to that material which had the "anything we want to do
with this, we can" sort of terms, and so chose to add it to the trees.

Not necessarily something I'd have done, but not a violation of the terms
under which the files were submitted, at all.

Before internet became popular, we had FIDO. Broderbund contacted
genealogists on the free bulletin board and asked us to donate our material. We would
then be given 10 dollars off on the CD that held our data.
Like DUH!
They were up front about the whole deal.
We give, they sell back.
.
What was even worse, some questioned their own material as undocumented,
incomplete, even error ridden, but Broderbund said we could submit new material
as we found it Not to replace what was already on the CDs, but as a new file
to go on another CD, which we could then buy.
DUH!
Broderbund was purchased by a company that sold the data to another company
and I supposed Ancestry.com is the current owner. The terms, as I understand
it, never changed.

We give, they sell.

I am using the family data bases on Ancestry.com, but only as a guide to
proving the accuracy I find in censuses and other sources. If the information
proves out as given, then I feel comfortable listing it as a source along with
the other documentation I find.
