Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: One World Tree

The information that
is in question in this particular thread came from my files and ended up on
One World Tree without my knowledge.

However, the information taken from my files was never submitted to
Genealogy.com nor was it posted on an FTM family tree site or any other
online site.
How can I tell? The incorrect spellings of some of the names were only in
the
files in my computer and had never been put on a public access site. They
were in my FTM software program and were soon corrected.

My reply:

So you are saying that somehow FTM stole your data directly off your
personal computer and placed it on One World Tree without your knowledge or consent
and you never submitted it to anyone?

Impossible! You no doubt shared your data with a friend or relative and
that person added it to his GEDCOM and submitted it publicly which is how it got
online -- assuming you did not submit it *publicly* anyplace yourself and
simply have forgotten that you did so. Once a GEDCOM is publicly uploaded by
someone (whether it was you or someone you entrusted with your database) the
public domain data included in that file may be included in the One World Tree
searches. But, someplace, sometime, you had to have shared your data with
someone else (misspellings and all)--either publicly or privately--and that is
how it became accessible via OWT. It wasn't obtained by Ancestry through
theft or osmosis.
