Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: census puzzle-oops!

ANSWER TO BELOW:

Edwin or Cornelia,
Truthfully I looked at the censuses earlier this morning but just got around
to answering your message.

The Census information on the birth of Marjorie Hartnett, listed as
Granddaughter did not make sense. I used the "Spy Glass" at the top of the Ancestry
page to enlarge that portion and I on both parents I read...............IRE -
English.

Now this might have been possible for the father since apparently it was
not a son of Fred Moffitt BUT both Fred and his wife were born in the US making
it almost impossible for that to be the correct information on the mother's
place of birth.

Remember, these were not the originals......the census taker took the
information and then recopied it to the page that was to be submitted. This made
for an additional possible error.

EXAMPLE: In the 1900 Census for my Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles it
states the following...........James Flynn b. Ireland; Sarah Flynn b. Illinois;
Mary Flynn (daughter) b. Maryland. The rest of the children were correct with
state of birth being Nebraska. Actually James was born Illinois; Sarah born
Maryland and Mary born Nebraska. Due to the error in the place of birth I had a
difficult time locating the census page. After reading the page a little
more fully I assume that he had copied my Grandfather in error from the line
above (they both said Ireland) and then proceeded to compound the error. He even
had my Grandmother Sarah as a Locomotive Engineer but had crossed it out and
put it next to my Grandfather James!!
Consequently the places of birth of everyone's parent was in error.

However, again it looked to me to be IRE - English.
Gretchen

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

|
|would sks please check this censi and tell me what the place for an
|individual says (it's difficult to read) and what it means (it's not
|standard). this censi is a bit blurry at Ancestry and a little
|hard to read.
|I asked them for help but got one of those automatic replies
|telling me
|about making corrections to the census, which was not at all
|what I was
|refering to, so I'm turning to Roots-L in hopes of help.
|
|in the family of Fred Moffitt is his grand daughter, Marjorie
|Hartnett. her
|parent's birth place is odd to me and hard to read. would
|someone please
|check it and transcribe it for me.
|
|they are almost to the bottom of the page for this censi,
|Iowa > Black Hawk > 3-Wd Waterloo > District 20
|Fred Moffitt and family, Marjorie Hartnett
|thank you for your help.
