Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: To Submit or Not Submit, that is the question.

You are aware I am sure of leaving living people out of the gedcoms you
submit or you can simply submit it with the living if you choose
WorldConnect and let their filters sort out the living.

----
Margaret's advice is excellent--I just have one minor quibble. When
submitting a GEDCOM to WorldConnect, it is best NOT to try to privatize the living
person data prior to submitting for two very good reasons:

1) if you remove too much data before uploading your GEDCOM this can
actually have the reverse effect of what you intended because WorldConnect's living
filters use the birth, marriage, and death info in the file to decide whose
data needs to be privatized and whose does not. If you remove some of the
tools the living filters need to make those decisions you can actually end up
with data for some living individuals being shown by accident or too much data
being removed as "living" when that isn't the case. Let the superior filters
at WorldConnect do the job for you--don't try to pre-clean the GEDCOM. I
once saw a WorldConnect file where someone pre-cleaned it and ancestors from the
1500s were showing up as "living" all because there wasn't enough data
(dates) for the living filters to know these people were long deceased. <g>

2) should you ever find yourself in the position of losing data on your
computer and needing to retrieve the GEDCOM--if you pre-cleaned the living data
before submitting the file to WorldConnect, it isn't going to be there as a
backup for you when you retrieve the GEDCOM. If you submit your entire family
tree in the GEDCOM and let WorldConnect's living filters clean the file for
you--then if you need to retrieve the GEDCOM later on to replace lost data,
just use your original user code and password and you can retrieve your complete
file just as you uploaded it originally.
