Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: To Submit or Not Submit, that is the question.

In a message dated 4/30/2006 10:44:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time,
CDunkleberger@aol.com writes:

Would love everyone's opinions on whether to Submit Gedcoms of your Family

Tree to FHC,Ancestry or any other Gen site. YES or NO?

----
It all depends on whether you want to lock it up in a closet or on your
computer hard drive and have it die with you (or your hard drive), lose it in a
fire, hurricane or earthquake (which is, of course, your right); give it to a
few relatives who will probably put it on the Internet every place they can
think of (despite any agreement you think you might have for them to keep the
data private--after recopying it and, no doubt, incorporating errors to your
diligently-researched data in the process)--and worse yet--do so while
attributing all the errors to YOU; OR...you can put the data in one or more places
on the Internet, displayed exactly as you intend it to be displayed and where
you can correct any errors and make any additions to your file as you learn
more--and also where you can place contact information so that others
researching the same family can contact you and share their branches of your family
tree with you.

If your goal is hoarding, then keep the data to yourself--if your goal is
sharing, meeting cousins, and learning new information from them--then, by all
means, place your data on the Internet on WorldConnect where you control your
data and where it is safe from loss if anything should happen to your
computer and your house, and where you can retrieve it should you ever need to do
so.
