Hi Carol,

You will get a variety of responses no doubt, but in "my opinion"
sharing a gedcom at WorldConnect or elsewhere not only helps others, but can
bring responses from others that help you. The same data whether submitted
to Ancestry or WorldConnect shows up from both sides of that huge shared
database.

On quite a few occasions I have had thank you notes for my careful
sourcing and offering me additional information I might not have found on my
own without help, my classic story being a William Smith born in NYS.
Another researcher had noticed the unusual name of a descendant, and wrote
to tell me my SMITHs were Palatine SCHMIDTS. He not only sent me several
generations of the ancestors but a photo of these great grandparents as
well. I would NEVER have found this information had I not had a BARCUME in
my database that had a tie to this man's family.

You are aware I am sure of leaving living people out of the gedcoms you
submit or you can simply submit it with the living if you choose
WorldConnect and let their filters sort out the living. I like to limit the
number of generations people can download from my gedcom at once, and
WorldConnect lets one do this. The same database shows up in Ancestry but
if one submits to the Ancestry side, the option for the downloads is not
available there.

I always leave in my sources other than living individuals as I want
people to find the book or vital record and check the information out before
taking what I have as the absolute truth. No matter how careful we all are,
we all make some mistakes some minor and some more significant. Some
disagree, but I like to tell the user where my information came from and I
don't want email simply asking for sources as I have limited time for
research. Within the last year I have started submitting the gedcom with
notes as well as the sources as some family lines are problematic and a
discussion as to how I reached conclusions I feel important to people who
find what I submitted.

Another point about WorldConnect is that it is really easy to replace
one's gedcom as one get more information. One uses the same database
information for your first submission, simply point to where the gedcom is
on the hard drive and hit the update button.
