Subject: [ROOTS-L] some free genealogy web sites for Judy

"USGENWEB" (follow directions when you get the website up)
"familysearch.org" (Later Day Saints site)
"rootsweb.com"
"world connect project" (be sure and click on "ahnentafel", "pedigree" etc to see other ancestors and descendants.

All of the above have been placed online courtesy of "ancestry.com"
Also, try just entering a name and maybe you will be fortunate and a relative will have the information on their own website.
Most states have their vital statistics on line and charge a small fee to obtain the copies.
Join your local library for about $25 and ask if they have "Heritage Quest" online access- where you can use their password at home (most do) This site includes census records but also books, etc. that may have your ancestors information in them. Of course, if no one has obtained information about your ancestors.....

I appreciate having to spend much less time reading a census online versus traveling to a courthouse to do my research. I appreciate the technology and the number of personnel hours it must take "ancestry" to put all the information from periodicals, books, etc. on line.

My mother use to have to travel to distant places, pay for a hotel and meals, etc in order to obtain information of this type for her research. So, personally, I think the price of "ancestry" is inexpensive when you consider those costs before the age of the computer-especially if your ancestors came from "out of town".

I appreciate that some people cannot afford the cost of ancestry but I would doubt that "ancestry" could find enough volunteers to do this work or have the website space donated.
So, hopefully, you can find your information on the free websites and through your local or nearby libraries. (No. I am not a Mormon and no, I do not work for ancestry.com.) Lynne in Texas
