Hi Fred,

If you go to www.rootsweb.com and click on "Search family trees" under
"WorldConnect", you can search this large shared database for submitted
databases perhaps from people researching families that are of interest to
you.

This is the same database as the one found on Ancestry called Ancestry
World Tree. If you are a member you can access if from Ancestry, if not or
even if you just prefer, anyone can access it FREE from the main rootsweb
site as I described above.

A word of caution -- there is come good carefully researched material in
this database (similar to what one finds in the LDS shared databases) along
with a lot of duplication of inaccurate material. Many people find
databases of interest there and simply merge someone else's database with
their own. Sometimes the material merged contained significant errors. So
you may find the same incorrect material in the database many times. That
means that if you find the same information in many databases, you CANNOT
assume it is accurate. It may be accurate or it can be wrong. There may be
one single database that is accurate or there may be no one who has it
right.

But this large shared database can offer good clues, particularly if the
person submitting the database offers some sources that you can judge to be
of good quality. Some people don't post sources on line, but will give them
to you if you write and ask.

The bottom line is to check out any lineages you find of interest and
want to use in your own database before simply taking material which could
be correct or incorrect. That means looking for vital records for births,
deaths, and marriages, and particularly looking for documentation to link
the generations. There frequently are mistakes with people linked to the
wrong parents.

But again you may encounter some excellent material which saves you a
lot of work. Good luck in your search.

Margaret Scheffler
