Subject: [ROOTS-L] Wagner brick wall-MA, USA, & Eng/Pol/Russia

here is what I know and the family stories, which most I haven't been able
to prove.

my great grandfather
Charles J. Wagner son of Anton and Thecla
b. abt 1855 Poland/Russia
d. abt 1894 (said to be 3 Aug 1894 in Chelsea, MA, but no death record
found)
m. 4 Oct 1883 Boston, MA
Annie McDonald dau. of Allan McDonald and Sarah McPhail
b. 15 Jun 1858 Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia
d. 30Aug 1909 Oakland, CA

they had one child. my grandfather
Allan John Wagner
b. 7 May 1886 Boston, MA
d. 3 Aug 1969 Walnut Creek, CA

family stories, taken from memory of Allan John Wagner's wife, Florence
Ardell Wyruck, hint at a name change. it is known that her father spelled
his name Wyruck and her grandfather spelled his name Weyrauch, so I am
uncertain whether she meant her father or Allen's father in regard to the
name change.

my cousin in Sacramento has an original form for a death record for
Massachusetts. the only sections filled out are the ones required by the
physician, so it gives Charles' name, date of death, place of death and his
attending surgeon. it was never submitted to the vital records office.
either he did not die on 3 Aug 1894, or he was buried in the back yard or
dumped at sea. heaven only knows.

being on the wrong side of the coast to research this man, I'm having great
difficulty discovering anything.

what we do know about him (beyond what I've already stated) is this;

he was a mariner who worked on many ships and his position ranged from
seaman to first mate.

he worked on the Bark Sarah, the Schooner H. C. Sibley, the Schooner Stephen
G. Loud, the Sachem, the Mercedita, and several we do not know the names of,
all previous to his working on the Bark Sarah.

he worked during a time when seaman's papers were made, but they were lost
and are no longer available.

he was m. at the Springfield Presbytarian Church in Boston, MA, whose
records have, so far, eluded me.

he was in a storm in early winter of 1893, and the story is that he was hit
on the head by a spar and never fully recovered. he died of an aneurism to
his right aorta.

I have his medical records, which say he was b. in Russia, and his work
records for the above named ships, which give only his name, rank, and when
he was paid for his work aboard ship.

his son's birth record states he was b. in Poland.

family stories say he moved to England before coming to America-presumably
as a child with parents and, one would hope, siblings, but careful
examination of British censi have not disclosed any Anton and Thecla much
less anyone with a son Charles, Karl or Josef/Jakob b. abt 1855 in Germany,
Poland or Russia.

they lived at 46 Fayette, Boston, in 1885. he apparently was at sea in 1886
as he is not listed in the city directory. in 1887 it appears that Annie was
living at 6 Grenville Place, Boston. in 1888 or 1889 they were living at 434
Chelsea, E. Boston. in 1888 or 1889 it appears Annie was living at 6
Granville Place, Boston. in 1890 they were living at 267 Columbus Ave.,
Boston. in 1890 I cannot be sure if I have the right Annie. she is living at
213 Harrison Ave. in 1891 they were living back at 267 Columbus Ave. and
there is also a listing for a Charles Wagner, mariner living at the rear of
61 Prince in Boston. there was a falling out between Charles and Annie,
maybe more than one...in 1892, 93, and 94 they are away, unless Charles is
the rigger mentioned in 1894.-story is that he couldn't get work after the
accident-probably too sick to...Annie and Charles do not show up in any
manner I can recognise in the 1880 MA census. unless she is one of the
servants listed, and it's difficult to tell one Annie McDonald b. 1857-59
Nova Scotia from another. Charles doesn't appear at all and I have no clue
where he is before 1894.

can anyone help me find any of these possible clues/records that I might
finally find something new on him? can you think of other records that may
help?

1. burial record in Chelsea or Boston, I presume

2. marriage application from Boston, though where the records are, now?

3. tombstone in Chelsea or Boston, I would assume

4. naturalization record

warning, there are at least 3 or 4 different Charles Wagner's living in
Boston at the same time. one is a laborer, one is a policeman, one or two
are mariners, there is a bottle washer or packer, I think the latter, and
there is the rigger.

many thanks for your time and help
regards,
Cornelia
