Subject: [ROOTS-L] meaning of "late" in old records

It does NOT mean the husband is deceased. I have seen the same terminology
used to mention the maiden or former name of the wife. In my example, all
the heirs of George Stump were being named to sign a deed and my
ggg-grandmother is referred to as Lucinda Eagle, late Stump. (meaning her married name was
Eagle and her maiden name was Stump). The deed was dated 1825.

"It means the husband is deceased."
