Subject: [ROOTS-L] Pros & Cons of Ancestry.com

PROS:

I have a World Deluxe (or whatever it's called)
subscription to Ancestry.com. When they changed to a
USA or World subscription plan, it ended up being
cheaper for me than the previous "cafeteria style"
plans.

There's ALOT of info there and not just the censuses.
Directories, land documents, birth/marriage/death and
Military info - to name just a few of what they offer.

Even though they're free, I have to include the
Message Boards. I've found a great deal of info there
as well.

I have a disability and there's no way I can travel or
even get to my library on a regular basis. Because of
Ancestry.com, I have thousands of names in my Family
Tree Maker database. And because of the internet (and
so many wonderful people with whom I've had email
relationships), I've been able to verify much of what
I found at Ancestry.com.

CONS:

Just because your family info is there, it doesn't
mean it's correct. When I find an ancestor listed at
OneWorld on Ancestry.com, I try to verify it - a
census or land document or Soc Security Death Index
(which can also be incorrect, BTW!), etc.

The site wouldn't be what it is today if not for those
great people who posted their family trees. I haven't
posted mine yet but I sympathize with those who have,
only to find out they can't access their own info
unless they first purchase a subscription. If nothing
else, why not give them a discount - or a way they can
have free access only to what they posted.

If I had to do it again, I would definitely buy a
subscription.
