Shirley, for genealogy you always want to use the blood line when you know
it ... the adoption and all particulars can be listed in the notes .... If
you know the birth name then I'd list if as Susie Brown (Smith/Jones)
and it would be the Brown line that I'd carry on ..... not Smith or Jones.
Otherwise, in years to come for DNA or in case they are trying to find a
match for donor, they will have no idea where to look.
If it is a case of common-law or out-of-wedlock children, they bear no
shame (that's reserved for the adults) and while you don't have to "make a
point" of it, the real name, if known, should just be listed. By lack of a
marriage date that fact is probably going to be obvious.
I suppose there are reasons for adoption (insurance, etc.) but I always
think it a shame that too often the blood line is lost.
   Just my opinion -

Subject: [ROOTS-L] How do I list an "un-adoption"?

> I am a little behind in my reading of the past postings but have a
question that runs along the lines of common law children and
"out-of-wedlock" children. What is the proper way to enter children adopted
by a spouse then they are re-adopted? I have a male in my family who
married a woman with two little girls that he adopted. They later divorced
and she re-married and her new husband then adopted the girls.
> So they were "Sally Smith" and "Susie Smith" from their birth father.
Then became "Jones" and a part of my family. Then became "Brown" after the
mother married for a third time.
> How do I "adopt" then "un-adopt" them in my family tree? Or do I just
mention them in Notes on the "father" that they were a part of his life for
"X" number of years?
> I know of another family with the same circumstances so I'm sure it's not
unusual.
> Thanks Shirley
