Subject: [ROOTS-L] How do I list an "un-adoption"?

I am a little behind in my reading of the past postings but have a question that runs along the lines of common law children and "out-of-wedlock" children. What is the proper way to enter children adopted by a spouse then they are re-adopted? I have a male in my family who married a woman with two little girls that he adopted. They later divorced and she re-married and her new husband then adopted the girls.
So they were "Sally Smith" and "Susie Smith" from their birth father. Then became "Jones" and a part of my family. Then became "Brown" after the mother married for a third time.
How do I "adopt" then "un-adopt" them in my family tree? Or do I just mention them in Notes on the "father" that they were a part of his life for "X" number of years?
I know of another family with the same circumstances so I'm sure it's not unusual.
Thanks Shirley
